More than half of all consumers say they plan to buy gift cards, according to an annual survey by the National Retail Federation (NFR), which expects sales of the
cards to rise 6 percent to $26.3 billion, up from a total of $24.8 billion. If just a small portion of these sales could go towards charitable contribution efforts
then the overall impact on these fund raising organizations could be significant.
According to the NRF survey, gift cards are one of the most popular gifts
with 56.6 percent of consumers planning to buy them, compared to other top selling gift items like clothing, toys and books. And with popularity rising among
consumers of all ages, 87.7 percent of shoppers said they plan on purchasing two or more gift cards.
